2022 BMW X3 xDrive30e review
BMW is beating its chest about its transition to fully electric vehicles like the wild-looking new iX and a full-electric iX3, but flying under the radar is the carmaker’s set of more realistic and wider-appeal plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants. The 2022 BMW X3 xDrive30e integrates a conventional petrol motor with a small electric battery/motor combination to reduce fuel consumption overall.
Sounds good, but the downside is you’ll have to regularly charge the vehicle up using one of the fast chargers dotted around your city, or by plugging it into your house’s powerpoint. While the former will charge the vehicle quicker, plugging into a 3.7kW BMW Wallbox charger after a day of driving should see the car’s 11.15kWh lithium-ion powerpack charged in a claimed 3.8 hours.
BMW isn’t the only prestige manufacturer offering plug-in hybrid variants of its SUVs, the plug-in hybrid X3 goes up against the Mercedes-Benz GLC300e and Lexus NX450h+ . But it is one of the most expensive. Whereas rivals begin under the $100K mark, the X3 xDrive30e costs $104,900 before on-road costs .
It’s taken BMW some time to find its groove with its cabins, but the German marque is back among the best with its latest range of models. Whereas preceding models looked tired and plasticky, the interior of the X3 xDrive30e presents well and stocks an adequate amount of technology.
Materials use is also top-notch, with surfaces covered in Vernasca leather upholstery and other fancy adornments like metal-embellished window switches and woodgrain trim accents. Everything is ergonomically at hand and the driver’s seat can be manipulated into a comfortable, high-perch driving position. Vision out through the wagon-bodied SUV shape is excellent and cabin ambience is heightened by a standard panoramic sunroof.
A downside of opting for the battery-equipped X3 variant is a reduction in boot space. While you do get a power boot release to access the cavity, capacity is reduced by 100L when compared to its petrol-powered counterparts. This means the boot can fit just 450L with the rear seats in use, while it can expand to 1500L if they’re flattened.
Much of the X3’s safety kit is controlled using a handy button below the infotainment screen. Push this button and you can configure how you want the active safety systems to alert you to any impending danger or to turn them off altogether.
Frustratingly, BMW still only offers a three-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty on its vehicles. While the hybrid battery is warranted for six years (with 100,000km stipulation), the car itself is only covered for three years. BMW’s competition is doing better when it comes to having its owners’ backs, with brands including Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Lexus, and Audi all covering their vehicles for five years.
This is useful for when you want to save the car’s electric drive for a specific point on your journey. The car will charge its battery to a predetermined (by the driver’s selection) percentage before then reverting to normal hybrid power.
Good news for those wary of driving electric vehicles – the changeover to a PHEV is an incremental step-change compared to going full electric. When the car switches over between petrol and electric power, the change is almost imperceptible in terms of noise and feel, befitting of a luxury vehicle.
BMW says the X3 PHEV can run from zero to 100km/h in 6.1 seconds , and it feels suitably fast by the seat of the pants. The two power plants work in unison to deliver a strong and intentional punch when the throttle is depressed, while the transmission is incredibly smooth in all applications.
The PHEV powertrain of the X3 xDrive30e is a fantastic demonstration of the technology and will see your fuel bill reduced by a considerable margin, though you will need to be responsible for plugging it in whenever possible.
That said, you do pay a substantial premium in the first place. At over $100K, the variant is one of the most expensive PHEVs in its class, and the add in price over its petrol-only stablemate is eye-watering.
There is no doubt the X3 xDrive30e is a fine product, but whether the purchase is ultimately worth it will come down to how much you value the environment, rather than those keen on saving money at the petrol station.

BMW X3 xDrive 30e PHEV: We tested the new hybrid SUV and it’s super smooth
From the very beginning, we were surprised by the silence of the motor. Like a cat, the X3 made its way through Paris unheard. Which, given its size, is a bit unusual. Since this younger sibling of the glorious X5 comes in such substantial proportions, its new traits stand out even more. With a generous grille and more refined lights, this version has the sporty look distinct to the M line, perfectly shaped to eat up the miles. Devour them even.
The BMW X3 PHEV, a plug-in hybrid
It’s a good thing, too, because we were planning to cover quite a distance to get to the coast. We opted to go all electric to leave the pleasantly packed Parisian environment. In a monastic silence, and for nearly 50 km, we drove on the car’s only electric recharge. When we reached the end of the recharge, you had to listen closely to hear the combustion engine hum. In reality, we truly figured it out when we saw the tachometer spring to life.
When driving, the four cylinders offered nearly 300 horsepower, which was more than enough to have fun. And, still cut off from the world by the padded interior, we preferred to keep a close eye on the main information display to stay on track. On board, the car did not change, it got better. Regular customers will still find the famous gesture controls or the brand’s large trapezoidal screen in the centre of a redesigned dashboard. Everything is in its place and nothing is missing. Like the radio volume knob or the air conditioning control which remain physical and are not accessible through any submenu of the touch screen like you can find elsewhere.
The BMW X3, between sustainable mobility and impressive performance
It must be said that BMW has been exploring new mobilities for nearly a decade, as seen with its iconoclastic I3. And in ten years, the feedback has been eloquent. BMWs, however modern they may be, are still real cars, with that distinctive feel that adds a touch of sport to each trip. With its comfortable mocha leather seats and panoramic sunroof, the atmosphere on board calls to mind German chic. And considering the €80,000 price tag of our model, this is good news.
On the outside, the newly available grey, subtly opalescent blue light tone contrasts effectively with the large, crisp black lacquered M wheels covering the large blue brake callipers. Our ride stood out and when we stopped at the petrol station, we got no small number of looks. It was an opportunity to fill up twice: with petrol, of course, but also with electricity thanks to a charging station. Or rather, to recharge, in a mere 15 minutes, the 70% that we would need on arrival in Cape Town to enjoy total autonomy. Recharges take place like filling a bottle of water. It starts slowly, then goes more strongly, and then finishes slowly. And that’s why you don’t necessarily recharge the last 20% if you don’t want to waste too much time.Once in Cap Ferret, the switch into electric mode is a must. With the windows down and the rooftop open, you’re inviting the sounds of nature to travel with you. And those are quickly replaced with salty sea smells: the oysters that are served just about everywhere. Park, plug in and walk, toes in the sand, to find the best seafood around. The weekend is off to a good start.

The X3 is iconic BMW, having come to be the face of the brand for many buyers, the mid-size SUV exemplifies the Bavarian marque’s ‘kidney grille’, sharp and tall lines, and strongly defined body.
It’s part dainty luxury car and part buff Germanic tourer in equal measure. Suffice it to say fans of the brand will love it, but it’s not going to make converts of anyone else.
Newer design elements which adorn the X3’s body include the striking tail-light design, and little plastic fills below which combine with its contrast bumper and dual-exhaust ports to make for a sporty looking SUV.
The wheels look enormous and add enough chrome to the picture to keep it looking sleek, while subtle badgework has always been a hallmark of a good BMW.
BMWs have always had a relatively minimalist take on the interior design, and overall this is a space in which progress has been made at a glacial pace throughout the brand’s history, wild 7 Series limos being the exception to the rule.
This means the X3 gets the iconic centre-panel, ever so slightly oriented to the driver which houses the two centre air vents and climate control buttons, and a small panel below which houses the volume knob and shortcuts for the radio.

The digital revolution has very much come to the interior of this SUV though, as the top of the dash is adorned with a single enormous panel, and a second one set in the instrument binnacle in a classic fashion. It will all be quite familiar, even if you’ve skipped a BMW generation or two.
The wheel is a key touchpoint, clad in a lovely soft padded leather but with a chunky three-spoke design and massive notches at 10 and two for you to rest your hands on.
I don’t like this wheel in the brand’s more dainty sports cars like the Z4 where it feels too big, but it definitely feels at home in the X3.
Quality materials with plenty of soft-touch plastics and leather trims extend their way into the door, while the software is appealing in its design and fast to respond; clearly backed by strong hardware.
A final thing worth noting is the X3 has one of the more dated interiors in the BMW range. While it has been augmented with digital upgrades over the years, it doesn’t feel as contemporary as the incoming range of cars with the next-gen design elements.
