Final Fantasy VI Wiki Guide
Espers are the magical beings at the center of Final Fantasty VI. Characters are able to equip them, in the form of Magicite, to summon in battle. Equipping Magicite will also allow characters to learn the spells of that Esper by accumulating AP. Once the spell reaches 100% it can be used permanently. Another nice bonus is that some Magicite will grant stat boosts if equipped when a character levels up. Refer to the list below for more info.
Note: Espers marked with a * are only available in the GBA and mobile versions of the game.
Final Fantasy 3/6 Walkthrough
After finding Terra in Zozo, you receive four Espers. This page explains how to use them.
Overview
You learn from Ramuh that after Espers pass away, they leave behind Magicite. The Empire is trying to drain magic from live Espers, but Ramuh reveals that you can only fully transfer an Esper’s power after it dies, using the Magicite that it leaves behind.
Equipping Espers
You can equip an Esper by going into one of your characters’s Skills menu, choosing Espers, and choosing one of the listed Espers.
Using Espers in Battle
In the Espers menu, put the cursor on an Esper to find out its effect in battle. To use the Esper in battle, equip it on a character as described above, then when it is that character’s turn, choose Magic and press Up. A window appears, showing the equipped Esper. Select it to use its battle ability. You can only do this once per battle.
Use Espers to Learn Spells
Your characters (even non-magic-using characters) can learn Magic by equipping an Esper. When characters have Espers equipped, they will earn Magic Points after each battle with a magic-using enemy. After earning enough Magic Points, they will master the spells and will be able to use them in battle from then on. After the spells are mastered, there is no need to keep the Esper equipped in order to use those spells.
Advice
The Esper’s list of spells will show you the rate at which you learn the spells. A x1 means that you need to earn 100 Magic Points before the spell is learned, a x2 means that you need to earn 50, and a x10 means that you need to earn 10, for example.
You can check the list of Espers to see the character’s progress in learning the Esper’s spells.
In some cases, multiple Espers teach the same spell, but one Esper might teach it at a much faster rate than the other.
Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age Espers – How to Unlock and Use Espers, All Esper Locations
If you’re struggling to get your head around how Espers work in Final Fantasy 12, then check out our guide on how to unlock and use every Esper in the game.
Final Fantasy 12’s Espers are this iterations version of the traditional Summon. These monsters are able to unlock certain segements in Licensing Boards (mainly the ones that utilise magic skills.) and are pretty useful while in Combat. We’ll run through the Final Fantasy 12 Esper locations for you.
Final Fantasy XII Espers
Espers come in 3 Levels, which is noted by the difference in summoning costs, displayed below. Each of these Espers are some of the most difficult fights in the game, so we’d recommend to leave the higher level ones until late in the game. Only after you defeat these Espers that they appear on the License Board, but be warned, the Espers can only be assigned to one character each, so choose which Esper would align with how you have chosen your character’s jobs. You don’t want to be stuck with an Esper that unlocks abilities that are of no help to your character.
These Esper Summons have no charge time, and replace two of your characters in battle. They can easily be summoned via the main battle menu under ‘Mist’, and can even be performed when your characters are silenced. These Espers will also deal a lot more damage if you are able to manage to trigger their final attacks, which are notoriously tricky to activate.
In this version of the game, Espers are not quite as useful as they are in the vanilla release, however you can still seek them out for fun and collect them for your own posterity. In many cases, Quickenings will be a lot more useful for you and your party than Espers, so we would actually recommend using a Quickening and chaining them over an Esper, who might not do as much damage, and who do not actually use up any of your Mist Gauge-if you use them correctly.
Wondering where to seek these beasts out? Well, no fear- we’ve already taken them down ourselves and listed the locations and conditions of their appearance, as well as segmenting them down into levels, which is indicative of their summoning costs in addition to licensing costs (with the exception of Zodiark, who has a ridiculously high licensing cost).
