Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town Review
It’s barely the end of my first year in Mineral Town, yet Marie is eyeing me with romantic interest. My burgeoning little farm didn’t have much to offer at the start, but it did have a grape tree, and Marie loved wild grapes. I’d dole them out after working the land to raise my reputation with the locals, but Marie – sweet, reclusive Marie – adored the gift. Winter wasn’t even out, but I’d already established a relationship.
That’s the general tone of Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town compressed into a single year, though don’t believe for a moment the game lacks greater depth or variety. A remake of the 2003 Game Boy Advance classic, Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town (and additionally More Friends of Mineral Town), this charming farming life simulator has aged gracefully in the intervening 17 years, and intelligent adjustments to a few of the core mechanics help this entry stand the test of time.
Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town – Your grandpappy’s Harvest Moon.
Anyone who played the original Mineral Towns on the Game Boy Advance will find themselves syncing with Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town’s general flow in short order. The remake is by and large the same game, just with new 3D graphics, a refreshed art style, and a few notable changes to modernize the experience. The call to action for your young farmer (of which there are four to choose from; two male and two female) remains simple: you wake up one morning to discover you’ve inherited a farm from your late grandfather (the setup from Harvest Moon: Back to Nature, which the Mineral Town games are themselves remakes of). You trot on over from the big city to Mineral Town, where you’re greeted by the mayor and given the farm to attend to as you see fit.
From here the game will introduce you to some tutorials whenever you try something new, but you’re otherwise left to your own devices. You can start tilling the land and planting seeds for harvest, spelunking the depths of the nearby mine, or foraging for goodies around Mother’s Hill to use as gifts for the locals. It’s on each player to find the rhythm best suited to their playstyle, which is as refreshing as it is daunting. In Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town your success is entirely in your hands.
When you either head to bed or the clock strikes 6am a new day will dawn, and you’ll be free to pursue tasks at your leisure. There are four seasons in Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town, each lasting 30 days apiece. Certain crops, activities, and events are only available during one season or another. You can engage with or ignore these all as you see fit, because Friends of Mineral Town expects you to play the long game. Some relationships take decades to complete, expanding your farm will extend beyond a single year, and livestock can be bred over time to produce better goods.
If you’ve never played a Harvest Moon game before, but enjoyed Stardew Valley then you’ll pick up what Friends of Mineral Town is throwing down. There isn’t a definitive end to these games; not in the traditional sense. You farm, you mingle, you mine, and you grow as the years wear on. It’s a simple loop, but an effective one. Plant some pineapples in the summer, gift Marie some grapes from your fruit tree, and make friends with the Nature Sprites in return for their assistance on your farm. Or, see how deep you can go in the Spring Mine before taking a soothing soak in the hot springs before your next excavation. Whatever floats your ducks, essentially (sadly, the game doesn’t have ducks).
There are smaller loops to engage with that keep the whole affair from becoming too repetitive, such as upgrading your equipment, farming the materials needed for a larger home, increasing your reputation among the locals to see how their narratives play out, and breeding the best horse for the spring races. There’s a litany of little tasks all vying for your attention, and thanks to the constant forward movement of time you can’t reasonably complete them all within a single year, or in some cases decade. Each day becomes a series of to-do lists, and there’s a true sense of joy to be found once you’ve identified your groove in Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town.
A large part of what makes the game work is how unrestricted your time actually is. Unlike Stardew Valley, there isn’t a set point you must be in bed. You can whittle away at the hours with abandon, so long as you keep an eye on your stamina and fatigue. Stamina is reduced by performing physical actions, such as watering your crops or chopping wood. Fatigue is what dictates whether you stay up all night or pass out and wind up in the medical clinic. Fatigue will begin to deplete after you’ve exhausted your stamina, while awake late at night, or when working during inclement weather. If you have the right food or frequent the hot springs enough you can keep these resources topped-off, effectively going without rest for as long as you can keep your fatigue from crashing.
In Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town you are rewarded for successful forward thinking and planning. Befriending the Nature Sprites and playing games with them will lead to less time personally tending to your farm. Maxing out relationships will unlock new recipes that’ll keep you awake longer, or sell for greater profits than the base materials alone would have. There’s always a clear path towards greater efficiency, and it’s easy to lose actual hours of your life to “one more day”, just to see your plans come to fruition.
A few tweaks and adjustments have been made to Friends of Mineral Town to keep it up to current standards, and they are mostly well-implemented. Inventory management is perhaps the best alteration: the D-pad controls your tools, and the right stick cycles through your inventory. Thanks to this separation tools have their own pouch divorced from your inventory, meaning you’ll rarely need to return to your storage bin to swap items around (especially after you’ve grabbed the Big Bag and Bigger Bag). Interacting with the world, your farm, and your items is kept simple, and the controls quickly fade into a smooth muscle memory.
Crops can now increase in quality with better soil, though this is achieved through an upgrade system unlocked after the first year and not with fertilizer. You can unlock an elevator for the mines, though it only travels 50 floors at a time and you’ll need to shower the Harvest Goddess with 100 daily gifts to earn it. All the traditional romantic partners from both Friends of Mineral Town and More Friends of Mineral Town are present here, but they have two extra heart events and there aren’t any restrictions on same-sex marriages (no longer titled “Best Friends”). There are even two additional partners – the eclectic artist Brandon, and flower-child Jennifer – to woo.
Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town is captivating from a gameplay standpoint. The whole experience is held together by a charming art-style that pops with color and simple detail. Existing fans will likely be dismayed to discover the original games’ character designs have been overhauled here, and that some characters barely look the same. The character portraits are well drawn and convey a host of emotions, but some returning favorites appear dramatically different.
Karen, who once sported blonde highlights and looked like the Midwestern gals I knew in Oklahoma capable of drinking most men under the table, has a more valley-girl inspired aesthetic. Ann (now Ran) has completely ditched her former tomboy apparel. I was personally fine with the updates (let’s be honest, the originals were belligerently influenced by the 90’s), but it’s worth noting for returning fans who hold the original characters near and dear to their hearts.
The graphics reminded me a bit of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, largely in a good way. Everything is awash with color, and each season brings a stark shift in the overall pallet. Objects, buildings, and NPCs are simple in concept, but they’re all well designed with just the right amount of detail. I played Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town on the Nintendo Switch, and the game ran fantastically in both docked and handheld modes. Resolution remained crisp, and the framerate a buttery smooth 60 FPS. It often felt like I was playing a first-party Nintendo title, which is by no means faint praise.
A couple of things hold Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town back, however, though nothing I’m about to discuss is cataclysmic. In anything, they’re bits and bobs I wouldn’t expect a remake to alter, but they haven’t aged as well as other facets of the game. For starters, your farm will remain a relatively static affair. You get the one barn and the one coop, and while they can be upgraded you won’t have the same freedom to specialize your farm as thoroughly as you could in more recent farming games. What you see at the start is largely what you get.
Mining has perhaps aged the worst, even with the new elevator. There are two mines in Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town – one accessible year-round, and one only available during the winter. Both of them have a staggering 255 floors to explore, and if the gods of randomization are not with you then reaching the bottom is a slog. There’s a reason people used a dual-save technique to clear them back in 2003, and that technique remains viable today. I’m fine with neither having enemies, a la Stardew, but it would have been nice if the elevator for the always-available Spring Mine was unlocked by default and stopped every five to ten floors. This minor adjustment would make the Lake Mine the more lucrative yet daunting excursion, but instead they’re both a pain to complete.
Music is largely comprised of remastered tracks from the original, which is great for returning fans looking for that delicious dopamine drop, but they all grow pretty old pretty damn quick. The arrangements are lovely, but their limited length means they’ll loop over, and over, and over again, with few tracks interspersed to break things up. The music’s good in isolation, but a little more variety would have been appreciated.
Finally, Rival Marriages are gone, despite many of the events remaining in-game. While the system did force players into picking their romance early on, it also added an extra layer of immersion to the original Friends of Harvest Town. Townsfolk interacted with each other, fell in love, got married, and started families of their own. The town grew and evolved around you, with or without your involvement. Without the system in place the world within Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town often feels like it revolves entirely around you, which saps the some of the magic away.
The Verdict.
These are all relatively minor nitpicks (except maybe the mines). In no way do they undermine the laid back nature of Friends of Mineral Town; they just stick out like sore, green thumbs. If those grumbles sound like small potatoes to you then I heartily recommend giving Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town a peak. It’s a fine game that leans on artful repetition, and if you find yourself in-sync with its casual ebb and flow then you’ll get more than your $50 worth out of the game.
Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town is a must-play for both fans of the franchise, and gamers in love with farming oriented life-sims. It doesn’t opt to break new ground, but instead play to its strengths, leaning on what made the experience great 17 years ago. So long as you don’t mind the game lacking some of the extra flair found in more recent titles, or the bits that haven’t matured as superbly as others, you’ll easily lose a real season or two to cultivating your farm and relationships in quaint, little ole’ Mineral Town.

Saibara and Gray appear to be in the middle of a heated argument with each other! You attempt to help, but Gray yells at you too. Saibara then scolds him for being so rude, which snaps him back to normal. They then welcome you to their shop. Saibara says he’s going to take a small break and leaves to go outside.
Gray is beginning to feel discouraged with his work. His grandpa doesn’t appreciate him and was telling him to redo the work he just completed. Gray tries every day, but he is considering giving up his training.
Choice 1: Steel your resolve, chin up (+3000 LP) Yea he knows, as it would be bad if he just gave up. Gray thanks you. He isn’t sure what Saibara is trying to tell him, but he trusts that day will eventually come.
Choice 2: Then just quit, dude. (-2000 LP) Is that what you say to other people? Gray asks you to leave.

Gray has something he wants to ask. He feels guilty about yelling at you earlier and wants to apologize. That wasn’t the proper way to greet customers to the shop. You don’t mind, which makes Gray happier. When he doesn’t know who someone is, he tends to have an attitude. He hopes that you don’t hate him for it.
Oh yea, you ship ores from the mine, don’t you? He works with ore and gems at the forge. He really enjoys it! Gray wants to make new things, but he hasn’t told his grandpa yet. He’s looking forward to doing something more.
Option 1: I’m applying to your fan club, Stat. (+3000 LP) Ah it’s not that big of a deal, but Gray seems happy. He’s a long way to go, but he hopes to become a better craftsman than his grandpa. Gray wants to show you his handywork after he makes it, but keep your expectations low. He’ll try his best.
Option 2: That’s only natural, I’d think. (-2000 LP) Gray is disappointed that you don’t appear to be interested. He confirms that he will do his best, especially if he can be successful at it. Maybe something he can make something for you. You nod your head in agreement. Gray tells you he’ll be looking forward to it.
Purple Heart Event

Monday
6:00 am to 12:00 pm
Sunny weather

You have seen the black heart event
Gray has a purple heart color (10,000 LP) or higher
Gray will greet you at the door in the morning. He says he was scolded again today by Saibara, but thinks he finally understands why his grandpa is so hard on him; it is to help him to become a better craftsman. Gray mentions that he doesn’t see you wearing a lot of accessories. Are you not interested in fashion?
Choice 1: I live to be adorned in opulence! (+3000 LP) He figured you would be interested! Oh, but he didn’t mean that in a bad way. Gray hopes you’re not angry with him. Anyhow, he made a broach and wants you to have it. He crafted the brooch without his grandpa knowing about it, though he doesn’t feel it is as good as what Saibara can craft. He had decided that the first one he successfully made would be a gift for you. Gray will then head back to the forge and leave you with Gray’s Brooch. You can place it on n your trophy shelf or store inside your cabinet; you can’t wear his gift.
Choice 2: Have you SEEN the dirt under my nails? (-2000 LP) Gray becomes sad and says he needs to return home.

Gray has a blue heart color (20,000 LP) or higher
Saibara welcomes you to his shop and tells you he wants to ask you something. He’s glad that you’ve become friends with Gray, as his grandson has few friends. Gray has even become a hard worker. You should be able to tell with how well your tools feel. He calls Gray over to his counter and tells Gray to take the rest of the day off. Gray is worried that he did something wrong, but Saibara thinks it is because he’s preoccupied with you. Saibara asks that you spend some time together with Gray.
Back at the inn, Gray tells you that sometimes he doesn’t understand his grandpa. He does have a question though; will you always stay here in town?
Choice 1: Couldn’t imagine life anywhere else! (+3000 FP) Gray is glad you don’t plan to move away. He was worried that you might be like Kai, who only stays for a little while, or like people who move away to other towns like his father. He has been worried if you were going to do the same. With you gone he would be lonely because he does not have a lot of friends. He’s glad that your here and now he doesn’t have to worry about it.
Choice 2: Who knows what tomorrow will bring. (-2000 FP) Oh, so you could leave… ah, no it’s nothing. He just wanted to talk for a little bit.
This event ends at 2:00 pm.
Yellow Heart Event
Walk into Saibara’s shop
Monday
10:00 am to 1:00 pm
Any weather
You have a Sickle in your rucksack
You have seen the blue heart event
You have given Gray a Preserved Flower
Gray has a yellow heart color (40,000 LP) or higher
Gray explains that his grandpa had to run an errand, so he’s in charge of the shop at the moment. He suggests that you come back later, but then his keen eye notices that your sickle appears to be in bad shape. Gray asks that you wait for a little bit while he fixes your tool, though maybe it would be best to wait until Saibara returns… Gray is concerned that he might make a mistake during the repair. You tell him that you want him to fix it! Gray isn’t entirely confident that he can do it himself, but he agrees to give it a try.
After a bit, Gray returns to the shop counter with your sickle. He’s really pleased that he completed the task successfully! Gray was nervous about repairing something by himself for the first time, but he wanted to try to repair it for you.
He’s been thinking a lot; since he’s still just an apprentice, there wasn’t much that Gray could do to help you with your farm. But, if your tools will need maintenance and repairs, maybe there is something he can do for you after all! He is motivated to work harder to train as a metalsmith so he can assist you, even it is just a little bit.
Choice 1: For a hothead, you sure are cool. (+3000 LP) You really think so? It’s natural for him to want to help his sweetheart, but he’s still glad that you said that.
Choice 2: Don’t worry about it so much. (-2000 LP) He doesn’t intend to lose sleep over it… he was just thinking he wanted to help a little bit.
Saibara returns to the shop and notices the sickle in your hand. He asks Gray if he had repaired your tool. Gray admits that he had, and Saibara tells him that he did a good job! Saibara believes that Gray might finally understand what he has been overlooking all this time.
After Saibara leaves, Gray is very relieved. He is pleased that Saibara finally recognized the hard work he’s been putting into his training. Though, he wonders what his grandfather meant by what he has been missing. Maybe he has been missing confidence? Gray admits that he may have lost his confidence along the way.
Gray thanks you for being there for him. It’s as though going steady with you has started to lift the haze and reveal sunnier days ahead. It might not be much now, but someday he will become a master craftsman.
Orange Heart Event
Walk out of your farm house
Any day of the week
10:00 am to 1:00 pm
Sunny weather
You have seen the yellow heart event
Gray has an orange heart color (50,000 LP) or higher
You bump into Gray as you walk out of your house. He asks if you would like to grab a bite to eat, so you head out to the inn for some food.
As the two of you chat and enjoy your meals, Dudley tells Ran how lately it’s been nice to see Gray laughing and smiling so much. She hasn’t noticed, but Dudley has never seen Gray smiling so much before. It even makes him smile! Ran still doesn’t follow what her dad is saying, but reminds him that he’s suppose to be taking care of Gray’s drink order.
Dudley walks over to the table and delivers the drink to Gray. Before he leaves, Dudley tells Gray how he’s notice Gray’s personality change and how he’s smiling all the time. Previously, he would just hang out with Saibara and had an air of inexperience about him, but now he seems a lot more assured of himself. Gray didn’t know that Dudley thought of him as imcompetent, though Dudley clarifies that he didn’t mean anything bad; he just wanted to comment on how great of a guy Gray has become. Dudley apologizes and tells Gray that his drink is on the house.
Gray is fixated on Dudley’s words. He asks you if you think he’s grown.
Choice 1: Maturity looks good on you. (+3000 LP) That’s good! Previously, Gray just wanted to be acknowledged by his grandfather, but that was before he met you. Now he feels like he has a firm goal of standing by your side. He can feel the motivation growing inside of him.
Choice 2: You have much yet to learn, grasshopper. (-2000 LP) Gray didn’t think you would be the type to raise his expectations, only to crush them under your mighty farmer boot.
Gray feels he has grown a bit, all thanks to you. He is looking forward to being together with you.
Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town
Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town supports up to 8 save files, giving you lots of new game possibilities. When starting your game, you’ll pick your skin color, character style, name, birthday, and difficulty level. These options cannot be changed once you confirm your selections and begin your new life on the farm.
Character
There are four character styles to choose from when starting your game: the original farmers from the Gameboy Advanced game (Pete and Claire), and two modern farmer styles (Yuuto and Naomi). There are also three skin color options:
You can’t change your character style or skin color after starting your game, but you can change your clothing outfit. The mirror inside your farm house allows you to swap from the traditional farmer outfit to the modern farmer outfit of the same gender of your chosen character. For example, overall-wearing Pete can also wear hoodie Yuuto’s outfits (and visa versa), but can’t wear Claire’s overalls or Naomi’s hoodie.
Name
Your farmer name can be up to 8 characters in length. This cannot change after you’ve started your farm adventure.
You also have an 8-character limit for naming your future farm animals and pets.
Birthday
There are four seasons per year (spring, summer, fall, and winter) and 30 days per season. You can select any day to be your birthday. If you happen to select the same day as a marriage candidate’s birthday, the candidate’s default birthday will move to an alternative date. For example, if you pick your birthday to be Summer 3, then Popuri’s birthday will move to Summer 10. You can have the same birthday as a normal villager. Even selecting your birthday to be the same date as a festival is a-okay.
On your birthday you’ll receive Happy Birthday letters in your mailbox from the villagers and marriage candidates. There’s no party or gift exchanges. During a normal conversation nobody in Mineral Town will give a how-de-do that it’s your birthday.
After you are married you’ll get an evening birthday party. Walk into your farm house between 6:00 pm and midnight to trigger an event with your spouse. You’ll be asked if you know what the significance of today is. Answering with “It’s my Birthday!” will earn you +3000 LP with your spouse and +20 FP with your kid if you have one. Picking any other option will result in -2000 LP with your spouse and -10 FP with your kid.
You’ll also celebrate your spouse’s birthday in the same way, hence why the game doesn’t allow for you to share the same birth date as a potential marriage candidate.
Difficulty
There are two difficulty modes to select from when starting your game: Simple Mode and Normal Mode. Simple mode is meant to be a little bit easier to play, whereas Normal doesn’t include any extra benefits.
Simple Mode
Start the game with 2500 G
There are 9 Turnips in the field ready to be harvested, and 9 more that have sprouted
Shipping items will earn an extra 20% profit
Giving gifts will earn 20% more friendship points (FP), but not 20% more love points (LP)
In Normal mode, players being with 500 G and no Turnips growing in the field. In both modes there is a small patch of fodder grass in the southeast corner that will spread on its own.
Game Over?! During the game’s introduction, telling Mayor Thomas that you are not interested in taking over your grandpa’s farm will end the game. You’ll see the game credits scroll and then return to the title screen.
